Designing Customised Bus Routes for Urban Commuters with the Existence of Multimodal Network – A Bi-Level Programming Approach

Customised bus (CB) is a cutting-edge mean of transportation and has been implemented worldwide. To support the spread CB system, methodologies for network design have conducted. However, majority them cannot be adopted directly multi-modal environment. In this paper, we proposed bi-level programming model to fill gap. The upper-level problem maximise usage system with limitation operation constraints. Meanwhile, lower-level capture traveller’s choice by minimising generalised cost during travel. A solving procedure via genetic algorithm further validated metro data at Shanghai. results indicated that route would attract nearly 5,000 users morning peak period under given transaction data. We studied features selected routes found mainly served residence commercial or industrial parks travellers provide travel service fewer stops, higher efficiency travelling through expressway.
